イラク議会選、1月の実施不可能の見込み
|

Election officials in Iraq say it will not be possible to hold general elections in January as planned. Iraq cannot hold the vote until an election law is passed by parliament and approved by the country's presidential council. The constitution says general elections are to be held by January thirty-first. It also says the election law must be in place at least sixty days before the vote. Iraqi parliament members passed a version of the law on Monday, but it remains unacceptable to minority Sunni Arabs because it could decrease their representation in parliament. Iraq's Sunni Arab vice-president, Tariq al-Hashimi, vetoed an earlier version of the elections law. He says he may veto this version also. |
